Devin Rao

Associate, Medicaid planning and powers of attorney

Devin handles planning for long-term care: the Medicaid application, the spouse who stays at home, and the papers that let a family act.

Devin came to the firm in 2017 after clerking for a circuit judge. He spends much of his week with adult children who have just learned what a nursing home costs each month, and with the parent who would rather talk about anything else.

He prepares durable powers of attorney and health care directives for clients of every age, and builds Medicaid plans that protect what the law allows for a spouse at home. He makes house calls and hospital visits when a client can't come downtown.

How Devin works

Devin's first meeting with a family usually includes a legal pad and a list of every account, policy and deed they can find. He would rather spend an hour sorting paper with you than guess at a plan.

He explains the look-back period, the spouse's allowance and the application itself in the order they will matter to you, and tells you plainly which parts you can do yourselves.

If a parent is already in the hospital, he will come to the bedside. A power of attorney signed in time saves a family months in court.
